Elijah flees to Mount Horeb

Ahab informs Jezebel

Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb

Following the dramatic confrontation on Mount Carmel, in which Elijah dramatically demonstrated the power of the Lord and called down fire from heaven, King Ahab returned home and recounted the events to his wife, Jezebel. Enraged by Elijah's actions, Jezebel vowed to kill him, sending a messenger with a threat to his life.

Elijah’s escape and the journey to Mount Horeb

Informed of Jezebel's murderous intent, Elijah fled, fearing for his life. He traveled south into the wilderness, seeking refuge. As he journeyed, he was sustained by a miraculous provision of food sent by God. Strengthened by this divine nourishment, Elijah traveled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai.

The significance of Mount Horeb

Mount Horeb held great significance in the history of Israel. It was the location where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God and where the Israelites entered into a covenant with Him. The fact that Elijah sought refuge there indicates his desire to connect with God amidst his trials.
