Clarence Birdseye: Pioneer of Modern Frozen Foods

Early Life and Career

WEB Clarence Birdseye was born on December 9, 1886, in New York City. He studied biology and ornithology before embarking on a career as a naturalist and explorer.

Inventing Frozen Foods

In 1924, Birdseye witnessed the Inuit freezing fish in cold temperatures. Inspired by this technique, he developed a quick-freezing process that prevented the formation of large ice crystals, preserving the flavor and texture of food. In 1925, he founded the General Seafood Corporation, the first company to commercially freeze fish fillets.

Legacy and Innovations

Birdseye's invention revolutionized the food industry, making it possible to preserve food for longer periods without canning. He also developed other innovations, including an infrared cooking oven and a moisture-proof packaging material. Birdseye died on October 7, 1956, leaving behind a legacy as the "father of frozen foods."
